MERSEYSIDE MARATHON GETS LADIES READY TO RUMBLE

Sixty-four minutes of competitive water polo in Liverpool - however 'friendly' - is always certain to blow away summer holiday cobwebs and serve as a stark reminder of the need to hit the training pool once again!
And so it was for our Leeds Sharks and Hammerheads ladies during the weekend's round robin match of eight quarters; which gave both coaching teams a chance to experiment with structure and rotations - and get a glimpse of what the regional and national leagues can expect from Yorkshire and Merseyside during the coming season.
Though more about strategy than the scoreline, the Liverpool hosts accounted for 22 of the event's 38 goals. Defence honours on the other hand, most definitely returned to Leeds with us after several very robust and impressive displays - notably from Selene Chew, Miriam Ridha and Louise Highton.
Cheeky moves by sisters Ellie and Sophie Sowerby earned them both goals, and solid solo efforts by Emily Pilkington, Georgina Dutton and Emily Sutcliffe also sent the ball to the back of the Liverpool net despite fierce resistance from local stalwarts Katryn Fowler and Verity McCoy.
An insightful curtain-raiser; which surely left Leeds coaches Andy and Mark with much to work with and look forward to when the season gets underway next month. Go girls!
