SHARKS ENCOUNTER PRODUCES TOUGH FIRST OUTING FOR YORK LADIES

Leeds Sharks Ladies got their inaugural Wakefield & District water polo league campaign off to a flying start on Sunday by dispatching newcomers York Ladies in a one-sided 9-1 encounter.

Most of the damage was done in the first half by a succession of well-practised moves by the hosts that produced early goals for Jas Littler and Isabelle Lacy.

A consistently robust defensive display by York’s Mary Patterson and Jess Miller – and a cleverly-worked opportunist goal from Annabeth Pyecroft restricted Leeds’ lead to 2-1 by the end of Q1.

A dominant second phase saw Leeds’ lead extended to 6-1 by half-time thanks to another goal by Jas Little, two unstoppable shots from a super-cool Minnie Gale and a cunning lob from Ellie Sowerby.

Keeping York at bay during Q3 was a triumph for the agility and dexterity of goalkeeper Lynne Desborough, some solid defence by Sarah Davies, Clare Harrison and Giulietta Lane - and another great finish by Ellie Sowerby following slick passing by Selene Chew and Georgina Dutton.

Though an intuitive block by York's goalkeeper saved the first of two great shots from Shevonne Lowth, her second took Leeds to 8-1 at the mid-way point of Q4. Ellie Wilson sealed the deal for Leeds in the final minute.
